Compstall Ist XI v Old Glossop Ist XI 10.05.2008

With the sun threatening to break through and prospects of a good game Compstall entertained Old Glossop on what looked and proved to be a good cricket wicket. Compstall skipper Peter Richards won the toss and elected to bat , with Stewart Jackson sunning himself on holiday Paul Needham opened with David Bailey against the visitors opening and very lively attack of Matt Woodcock and Rob Adderley . After a very cautious and watchful start Needham was bowled in the 9th over by Matt Woodcock , Compstall 17-1 , Mark Richards was next to the wicket and he was quickly into his stride as Old Glossop changed to spin with Declan Hall and Paul Eyre. The partnership between Bailey and Richards flourished with Richards  the dominant partner as he struck the ball sweetly on both sides of the wicket , unfortunately with the score on 151 he was yorked by Adderley for an excellent 76. Peter Richards joined Bailey and the pair upped the tempo before Richards became Adderleys second victim , 180-3 , wickets fell in the quest for the extra batting point which was realized in the final over as the innings closed on 225-7 with Bailey falling in the penultimate over for a fine 74. The Old Glossop innings started  much the same as Compstalls with James Cannon and Steve James very watchful against the attack of Rick Shaw and Pete Richards with the latter beating the bat on  regularly. A change of bowling brought the first wicket as Stuart Bass had James caught by Rick Shaw and this was followed by the 2nd wicket that of Adam Demidh caught Jimmy Stanton bowled Bass , the introduction of Matt Shelton into the attack dried up the flow of runs and just as the visitors appeared to be making up the run rate Pete Richards came back into the attack and immediately accounted for Lee Shuffle-Bottom caught and bowled. At this stage Mark Richards was introduced into the attack and his first victim was the dangerous Matt Woodcock stumped Bailey for 18 to leave them 154-4 and a mountain to climb which appeared impossible until with 4 overs remaining Martin McGrail struck 23 off Pete Richards but fortunately he became Mark Richards 3rd victim brilliantly caught by Matt Shelton followed by further success next ball as Cannon was caught by Andy Jackson , Paul Eyre fell for a duck to Pete Richards and Declan Hall fell to Mark as the innings closed on 217-9 , Mark Richards concluding a successful day with 5-48 in a game that contained everything for the spectators .

Dove Holes Ist XI v Compstall Ist XI 03.05.2008

With a delayed start to the season Compstall began their 2008 campaign with a trip to newly promoted Dove Holes whose skipper , Dave Cartledge , won the toss and asked Compstall to take first knock. The Compstall openers David Bailey and Stewart Jackson opened the innings against the very experienced Matt Baldwin and Dave Cartledge , as expected on a very damp wicket runs were at a premium as both bowlers soon found their length . The first bowling change brought Dove immediate success as Sean Cartledge bowled Jackson for 20 , Compstall 28 – 1 , Paul Needham joined Bailey and the pair very watchfully took the score to 99 before Needham was caught behind off the bowling of Rob Jones , 99 -2 , new skipper Peter Richards was next in and after a couple of lofty blows became Sean Cartledges 2nd victim , 149 – 3. Stuart Bass helped Compstall to 167 when Bailey fell to Sean Cartledge for a fine 87 , the remainder of the batsmen all fell cheaply , and in some cases comically , as the innings closed on 183 a.o. The Dove reply was as cautious as Compstall as the opening pair of Mick Johnson and Rob Jones struggled to come to terms with the opening attack of Rick Shaw and Peter Richards and they lost their first wicket as Mick Johnson was caught off the bowling of Rick Shaw , 6 – 1 , Rob Jones was next to fall dismissed by Peter Richards , 15 – 2 , a brief rally by Dan Jones and Jo Gregory who each scored 15 was ended with the introduction of Matt Shelton and Mark Richards and despite a 10th wicket stand of 25 the Dove innings finished on 87a.o. with Mark Richards finishing with 4 wickets , Peter Richards 3 and Matt Shelton 2.

On Sunday Compstall traveled to North Wales to play Llanhraeardr in the National Village Cup and amassed 218 – 5 thanks to a century from Stewart Jackson and then dismissed the opposition for 77 thanks to 6 – 23 from skipper Peter Richards.

Chapel Ist XI v Compstall Ist XI 16.09.2007

The last game of the season and Compstall travelled to Chapel hoping for a  miracle in their quest for a 3rd consecutive title. Chapel skipper Martin Cooper won the toss and asked Compstall to take first knock , in the absence of Stewart Jackson skipper Dave Bailey opened with himself and Paul Needham.

Needham was first to fall run out in a classic “ yes no “ interlude , Jimmy Williamson joined his skipper briefly before he was caught behind off the bowling of James Hawtin leaving Compstall 14 – 2 , Peter Richards was next to the wicket and he and Bailey started to repair the damage very cautiously at first. With the score on 75 after 24 overs Richards started taking the attack to the Chapel bowlers and was joined by his skipper who had obviously decided that attack was the best form of defence and the pair took the score to 166  when Bailey fell to the bowling of Paul Jones for 59. Stewart Bass joined Richards and the real fun started as the ball disappeared out of the ground on a regular basis with Richards being the chief perpertrator , with the score on 189 – 3 only 5 overs remaining and Richards personal total on 85 he rushed to his ton with 3 consecutive 6s from the bowling of Paul Jones and ended taking 30 from the over , Bass was next to fall for 22 with the score on 234 – 4. Mark Richards joined brother Pete and the Compstall innings closed on 262 – 5 with Pete Richards closing on a magnificent 148n.o. which whilst being brutal at the end also contained some classic straight drives and cut shots. The Chapel reply also started very cautiously against some very accurate bowling from Rick Shaw and Peter Richards , however it was the introduction of Mark Richards to the attack that brought Compstall their first success as he bowled Tom Kelly for 9 ,  next to the crease was Gary Pheasey and once settled he and Harding took the attack to the Compstall bowlers in a partnership worth 127 before Harding was caught in the deep by Paul Needham off the bowling of Shelton for 85. At this point Mark Richards was brought back into the attack with immediate success as he had James Hawtin excellently  caught by Rick Shaw and then removed Mike Jenkins caught by Bass in the slips , at this point with Chapel well up with Compstalls score at the same point , and with Pheasey in full flow and the hard hitting Lee Bradley at the wicket Chapel inexplicably shut up shop and closed on a very lame 202 – 4 with Pheasey finishing on 86n.o. but possibly denied the ton he so richly deserved . The news filtered from over the hill that Old Glossop had beaten Hayfield and that meant Compstall had retained the Championship albeit shared with Hayfield.

Compstall Ist XI v Newton Ist XI 09.09.2007
Newton were the visitors to Compstall and in an exciting match put a huge dent in Compstalls aspirations of a hat trick of titles as they won by 15 runs.
Newton skipper Gary Wilde won the toss and decided to bat first opening the innings with Graham Penney and Andy Alcock against Compstalls usual attack of Peter Richards and Rick Shaw , Richards was the first to strike as he bowled Penney for 0 and in the next over Shaw accounted for Alcock caught behind , in the meantime Mark Barnard had come to the wicket and showed his immediate intent by hitting Shaw for a 6 over long on. Matt Mulkeen joined Barnard only to be bowled immediately by Richards , Nick Tantsella was next to the wicket and was struck in the nether regions by a ball from Richards and he had to leave the field which brought Alan Barnard to the wicket to join brother Mark . In a complete reversal of roles it was Alan outscoring brother Mark and indeed he reached his 50 first before he was eventually bowled by Matt Shelton , Tantsella came back to the wicket only to be dismissed immediately caught by Stewart Jackson off Shelton , skipper Wilde entertained briefly but it was in the last 8 overs when Newton, in the form of Mark Barnard , cut loose and added 60 runs to leave them 190 – 6 with Barnard not out 85 , Peter Richards 2 – 18 and Matt Shelton 3 – 36 the most successful bowlers. Compstall’s reply started disastrously as Alan Turner dismissed the first 3 batsman , David Bailey – 11 , Stewart Jackson – 9 and Jimmy Williamson – 6 , Compstall 42 – 3 . This left Peter Richards and Stewart Bass to repair the damage and with Bass played a supporting role Richards was able to play his shots as he hit the ball to all parts of the ground unfortunately Bass eventually succumbed to Alcock for 17 with the score on 107 – 4 . Mark Richards joined brother Peter and the pair looked to have the upperhand before Peter was eventually out for an excellent 70 on 127 – 5 , Andy Jackson came to the crease and immediately he and Richards had the fielders in a hurry as they ran excellently between the wickets with Jackson happy to give the strike to Richards who was hitting  the ball sweetly but it was this that was to be their undoing as Jackson was eventually run out with the score on 162 – 6. Richards was next out LBW for 27 to a ball that kept low , Mark Barnard came back into the attack  and mopped up the tail to leave Compstall all out 175. Mark Barnard 3 – 48 and Alan Turner 3 – 36. Compstall are away to Chapel next and have to hope for a favour from Old Glossop.

Hawk Green Ist.XI. v Compstall Ist. XI. 02.09.2007
In what finished as a convincing victory for Compstall against local rivals Hawk Green there were some nervous moments along the way for skipper Dave Bailey and his team. On winning the toss Bailey elected to bat and as usual opened the innings with himself and Stewart Jackson against the Green attack of Lee Hallas and Sam Messih who struck in his first over having Jackson adjudged LBW for 0 , in form Paul Needham joined Bailey and the pair battled it out through some hostile bowling , particularly from Hallas , to take the score to 69 before Needham was caught for 32 off the bowling of Josh Granite . Peter Richards was next to the wicket and he was quickly into his stride as he and Bailey , now looking at his imperious best , added 101 runs before Richards was adjudged run out much to the amazement of all present , bar one . Stewart Bass and Jimmy Williamson both added quick runs with Bailey who eventually fell for 93 , in the last 3 overs Mark Richards , 21 n.o. and Andy Jackson , 4 n.o. added a further 31 runs to leave Compstall on a formidable 246 – 6. The Greens openers Billy Strong and Andy Littler received a torrid reception from Compstalls opening attack of Peter Richards and Rick Shaw and it was Richards who put Strong out of his misery when he had him caught by Bass at first slip . Jordan Henderson was next to the crease and after a very lean season without a 50 he showed why he is one of the most dangerous batters in the league as he struck the ball sweetly to all parts of the ground and he and Littler added 103 before Littler was bowled by Bass for 23 , Hawk Green 103 – 2 , Bass and Mark Richards put the brakes on the Greens chase as Bass bowled brothers Lee and Shane Hallas in successive overs and Richards accounted for Craig Young to leave the Green 147 – 5 but with Henderson still at the wicket . Unfortunately there is no experience in the latter half of the Greens batting lineup and when Bass bowled Henderson for an excellent 93 skipper Bailey brought Peter Richards back in to the attack and he brushed aside the tail as the last 4 wickets fell for 6 runs to leave the Green 179 a.o. and Compstall with maximum points  Bass and Richards being the most successful bowlers with 4 – 46 and 4 – 36 respectively. Compstall are at home next to Newton
